Spectulative Zune HD shots

    It seems like there could be another Zune variant coming out sometime (according to Engadget). It could be called the Zune HD (which when Googled will reveal the product and the famous hard drive mod). No word on specs yet (other than it being a touchscreen device), but with a name like Zune HD, that screen had better kick some serious ass. Engadget comments have linked this to the HTC Touch Pro since the form factor and screen size and position look similar.

Possible Firmware Feature Leak

    Now, this is pure speculation, but a product description page over at Fry's (http://shop3.frys.com/product/5705192?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) has an interesting feature set to list for the Zune. I'll give you the short version, listing what Zune users would consider new:

Tagging songs from FM radio (obviously the radio station needs to broadcast the song info for this to work)

Device to Cloud-Access thousands of wireless Hotspots around the country to update your music collection (downloading to device from Marketplace, this reporter assumes)

Zune Channels-Downloads personalized playlists to your device based on sources such as music experts, celebrates, or popular radio stations.


Sounds pretty sweet if you ask me, but this is still a little behind what Archos has to offer. And this is pure speculation, but I haven't seen my little internet radio request.

iPod Games Ain't Got Nothin' on This! - Updated for 3.0

    
This may seem like it's a Photoshop (and it is, I had to add the gradient! ;) ),but this is a portion of my Zune's main menu as of yesterday. And to prove it's no lie, I offer you this:

That is a game (Rock Rain SD) currently running on my Zune. I now have three; the other two are the Zuneboards official Clock (ZBClock), and XnaTetris. Both pretty cool casual games, and Rock Rain has some pretty stellar graphics.

How did I do it? Well, thanks to Jamezspot, I followed this link (which was actually from a Gizmodo link he posted), installed the required programs, and compiled some source code. Now, for me, the two examples provided did not work (Galactic Wars 3 had some invalid characters in a filepath, and Alien Aggressors was made using an earlier version, so it said). But, I went over to the Zuneboards game thread, and downloaded a few, and they all were neatly compiled and deployed to the Zune. It's actually really easy guys! You may have read in my blog that this process is not n00b-friendly, well; it really almost is. The only easier solution is game deploying right from the software, which is what we'll probably see in the next update.

Some Updates:

The link in the tutorial says you need XNA 3.0 CTP. For the new 3.0 firmware, you will actually need XNA 3.0 Beta, (here). I'm assuming you can still use Visual Express (here) to compile the games. I can't try it out because I no longer have a Zune.

Change the Looks of Your Software Without Hacking It!

    
Here. I created my new Halo 3 theme using it, and thinking of creating a new theme later on down the line. It's so easy to create themes with this thing, and imports the "custom image" hack, and even puts in a "browse" button, so you don't have to type out where you put your background.

Zune 2.3 Software Released & 1100 users!

    
Just recently Microsoft rolled out the new Zune 2.3 software, with no new features it primarily fixes stability issues as well as common sync bugs and WiFi sync bugs. Even if you think you don't need to update because it doesn't add any new functionality, you should download and install the update. No doubt that I am very happy to see they addressed some sync issues as well as podcast subscribing issues.

In addition to the 2.3 update, there is a few more little pieces of news you guys might enjoy. Zunemods has hit 1100 registered users, thats a little over 100 new users this month alone! As promised, the Zunemods.net contest is on its way, and will probably occur during February or March! Zune Now Opened Up to other Jukebox Software!

    Just when you thought you were locked in one rather crappy piece of software, a pro hacker can bail you out! A new hack from PityOnU in Zuneboards allows the Zune to be recognized as a "Windows Generic Device" or even an iPod! Can you imagine that? Syncing stuff on Winamp or Windows Media Player? Someone give it a try and tell what you think (my internet service is severely dropping, I'm lucky to be reaching you guys right now).

Zune Originals 80GB Red!

    
Microsoft has just announced the arrival of the newest product available exclusively at zuneoriginals.com. An 80GB Zune that is red! Of course red Zunes have been available for some time now, but only in 4 or 8GB sizes. Does this signal the beginning for even more colors yet to come for the otherwise dull black Zune 80? I sure hope so!

1000 users and some exciting news!

    
First and foremost I would like to say how amazed I am at how this community has grown in the past year. We've hit 1000 users almost exactly after our first year anniversary of existence! However I dont think it will stop here. With the Zune becoming more and more popular and Microsoft really stepping up to challenge apples iPod, more people are buying Zunes now than ever before.

On that note, I am very pleased to announce our first ever Zune givaway contest! The grand prize will be an 8gb flash Zune, with some side-prizes including: Zune Pass Subscriptions and ZuneMods T-Shirts. The contest details will be released shortly, so stayed tuned for them in the near future.

Also, I would like to congratulate our forum members: Branhower, bald_gye, and Outragexl10 as they have been selected to be the newest global moderators for our community forums.

Are you lucky enough to have a Zune and know someone who has another one? Would you like to squirt fluids and songs with your future wife? Think the Wi-Fi song sharing sucks because the restriction that limits playback to three times? In other words: would you like to pirate some music on the go? For shame! Oh well, it's your soul, you are the one going to h-e-l-l, HELL. Just tag the songs' genre as "Podcast" and eliminate 3-play limit, any chance of redemption and the ability to browse your music by genre. [ZuneScene]

Zune Originals 80GB Disapoints

    
After being delayed until "early December " the 80GB Zune originals is now available for order, and sooner than expected! But is this a good thing? The 80GB Customizable Zune comes in only 1 color, black. Yes, you heard me correctly, black. This is a huge letdown, after everybody had their hopes up for a little variety in the Zune 80GB Originals. Other than that, the customization options are identical to those for the 4 & 8GB Zunes:
- Text Inscribed
- Text & Artwork Inscribed
- Artwork Only Inscribed

I for one am a bit disappointed they couldn't have added more color choices, but at least they made the 80GB Original available sooner than expected.

Zune 2 Software is Out!

    
The new Zune software/firmware is now available for everybody to download from zune.net. Everybody should upgrade to checkout all the new features! The software seems much more stable and uses less memory on my computer, so it looks like Microsoft really did make it better!


Head over to Zune Social to make your own Zune Social account and get a Zune Card with previously played music and other cool info to make your Zune experience even better!

There has been so much anticipation around here for the 2nd generation Zunes that i think many of us (including myself) hadn't even realized how fast we went from 700 to 800 users. As a matter of fact, it wasn't long ago we didn't even know what the new Zunes would look like! Its pretty awesome that we should hit 800 users on the eve of the day the new Zunes will be launched, and I hope we can grow with the release of the new Zunes.

Zune Launch Information

    
Today, as I was picking up some stuff for my computer at Best Buy I noticed a Zune display in their MP3 section. Expecting to see more of those Zune shaped accordion-folded info sheets, I was surprised to see an actual Zune 4gb player. As I played with the menu's and watched a few short video clips, I was met by the Zune Representative for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. We had a short conversation ranging from the best place to pick up a 80GB Zune on launch day, to what we thought about the iPod touches. I didn't write any of it down (as I had no paper) but I will write down what I learned here.

Best place to pick up an 80GB Zune model on launch day (Nov. 13):
Circuit City, many of the other retail stores wont even stock the 80GB models on-site. At Best Buy retail stores around here they will only be stocking the 4GB and 8GB models in-store, with the 80GB model available only online.

This article from ZuneScene may shed some light as to why the Zune 80GB models will be available only online from many retailers. According to the article, the 80GB Zunes ordered through Zune.net will have customization options such as:
- Different colors (YES! NOT JUST BLACK!)
- Name/text etching (Similar to the iPod laser engraving)
- Customized Logo engraving (with ~20 to chose from)
If ZuneScene's source is to be trusted, it would seem Microsoft still has at least one trick up its sleeve before launch day.

The firmware?
After playing with the demo Zune, I concluded that the new firmware was awesome, and rock solid. Its more or less the same navigation, with a few changes to make it even easier! And it looks pretty cool too. He also talked about how many people requested a visualization feature (think Windows Media Player). He said he had a chat with some of the guys from the development team and that it can be done fairly easily. The Zune has the processor to handle it, it's just a matter of porting it over.

Server transition & Downtime

    
It always seems like when moving to a new server, everything that can fail, will. Even though I prepared the database backups a day ahead and tweaked the code for the new server config we apparently still had a bit of downtime and trouble getting everything back up and running smoothly. I apologize for this inconvenience. However we are back up and running on an excellent grid server hosted my Mediatemple. Mediatemple is one of the best in the business and this should hopefully mark the end of all of our server issues and downtime.

My original goal was to transfer everything over to the new server sometime before the Zune 2 launch, and the downtime on the old server really pushed it ahead of schedule. So here we are on a very nice new server, just in time for the launch of Zune 2!

Zune 2 Firmware pictured leaked

    
With only 30 days left until the Zune 2 launch and the much anticipated firmware upgrades there has been much speculation as to what the new features will look like. I stumbled across some pictures of a Zune 2 beta firmware, these pictures show it connecting to the marketplace via WiFi and what appears to be a wireless sync in action. These picture leaks only make me want that WiFi update right now!

Zune2 Launch Nov. 13 & 700!

    
Well, its pretty well known around the Zune community that the new Zunes dubbed "Zune 2" are scheduled for a release on November 13th. So why am I making this post now? Its because I have never accually announced the release date here on ZuneMods, and also to show this picture that clearly shows the new silver metal back plate on the new Zunes. I personally think its looks horrendous, it doesnt match the Zunes color at all, and sticks out like a sore thumb. I would have much preferred a matching plastic backing (like in the current Zune models).

In other news, a few days ago we hit 700 forums users! Congrats to everybody, hopefully the new Zune 2 release will breath a new life into this place.

Zunerama recently help voting for a "Best of:" Zune websites and ZuneMods.net won the best "Site for Zune hacks and mods". So a big thanks goes out to everybody to helped to write our articles and reviews and helped this site to become what it is today!

Microsoft finally does something right!

    
After all had seemed lost, and Apple put what could have been the final nail in the coffin of what is the Microsoft Zune, Microsoft finally does something right. I know many of you are excited for the launch of the next generation Zune player, but the real news here is the imminent update for the 30gb Zunes!

Microsoft is promising a major firmware update for all of the existing 30GB Zunes to match the firmware that will come shipped with the new 80GB HDD based Zune and both flash models. What does this mean? ALL Microsoft Zunes will have the following features:

*Additional native video codecs for h.264 and MPEG-4
*WiFi sync to host computer!
*Podcast support, also can be shared via WiFi.
*The 3x3 song sharing DRM has had its three day restriction removed, but users can still only play files three times.

Not to mention a complete overhaul on the Zune software to support the WiFi syncing and to improve stability and use less system resources. Finally it would seem Microsoft is taking some sort of action to improve their Zune, and I must say that I approve.

Gizmodo claims they have found the first credible media photos for the Zune 2 styling. While they could be nothing more than fake photoshopped images, according to Gizmodo they came from a source who claims they are marketing photos for the Zune 2. The full article can be read here:

We did it.. 500 members and still going strong. Thanks for all the support from our users and mods we have hit a huge milestone. We have been growing at a rate of about 100 new users a month, which I think is great! As many of you know, we had set out ideas for what to do when we hit 500 users. So I think some of you faithful ZuneMods members had thought that I had forgotten about (or missed) the 400 member mark on our popular forums. I can assure you that I most definitely did not forget about it. This is yet another major milestone achievement for all who are involved with ZuneMods.net and I am proud of how our community has evolved. Although this news is exciting, I cant help but feel that Microsoft is spending more time making new colors rather than bettering the device itselft.. C'mon, we want to see a worthwhile firmware update!

XBOX Live Gamertag Support

    
I just added a new field in your user profile, this one is for putting your Xbox Live Gamertag into (if you wish). This will allow people to see your points, and Gamertag under your avatar for each post you make. To add your gamertrag, just go to your "Edit Profile" section and enter your info. You in the community wanted more interaction and we are trying to provide that as much as possible. So add other ZuneMods users to your XBL friends list and challenge them to a game!

UPDATE:
I made some minor tweaks to enhance the performance of this little widget, and also made a little system where by default it only shows your Gamertag, but when you click it the stats box pops up. This way it doesn't stretch out the forum post box too much.

Im happy to announce that ZuneMods.net has reached the 300 member mark! We are a small, but growing, community that offers many features. I have yet to find a Zune website that has as many posted mod tutorials, as well as software tweaks and reviews. Go Back to the Drawing Board, Apple.

    The nice folks at ipodmods have just released (from their months of research) the new 100g Toshiba hard drive compatible with the Zune! It is the same basic process of installing the 80g hard drive, and fits just like it. Who says we have to wait for Apple to come out with a bigger hard drive before we can have one bigger than theirs? Think of what you could do with 25,00 songs and over 300 hours of video. Remember, it is ipodmods.com so you get the 90 day warranty, so if you are new to this you don't have that much to risk. have at it!

OK, so it isn't quite as exciting as the blockbuster hit "300".. and yes its 100 less. But to us here at ZuneMods hitting the 200 member mark is a big achievement. Our biggest goal has always been to offer a great easygoing community that helps each other. As far as I've seen, support threads, and questions have always been answered or at least replied to within a day or two, and nobody is isolated for not being knowledgeable about the Zune. I can guarantee things will only get better here, with the addition of more features on their way.

Zune 1.3 Firmware Available!

    
Please update your Zune to the latest and greatest version, 1.3! Accordin gto the Zune updater, this update enhances stability and performance. There is nothing in there about added features. If this is true than 1.3 is a huge disappointment. I have classes all day, but ill play around with the new firmware, and i encourage all of you ZuneMods users to chat about it in the forums. In the mean time, enjoy 1.3!

Sync ".avi" files to your Zune!

    
KingJehu over at ZuneScene has made a nice little registry hack that tricks the Zune software into allowing you to put .avi files in your library and to auto encode them when syncing to your Zune. Just what we have been waiting for!

A bit of downtime

    
Some of you may have noticed a bit of server downtime earlier today. No need to worry, this was only a temporary issue that was quickly corrected and everything seems to be just fine with the server.

The Zune Can Now Talk to Vista!

    
Thanks to a software update, the Microsoft Zune is now compatible with Windows Vista. Not too big of a deal, seeing as Vista is not yet available to the public, but it was still somewhat concerning that the flagship MP3 player by Microsoft wouldn't even get recognized by the Windows Vista operating system.
